Understanding Compromised Debit Cards

If you receive a notification from us that your card has been compromised, it means that your card information may have been obtained by an unauthorized source and is at risk of being used fraudulently. Cards are compromised when a merchant you’ve used your card with has experienced a data breach, or if someone attempts to use your card number without your authorization.

When a compromise impacts our cardholders, SHAZAM®, our debit card processor, sends us a list of affected cards. Specific details about the breach are rarely disclosed to the bank due to the sensitivity of the information involved.

What to expect when your card has been compromised:

  • We will reissue you a new SHAZAM®Chek Card. The new card will be mailed directly to you. In the meantime, your current card will remain active and you can continue to use it as normal.
  • It does not mean fraud has occurred or will occur on your account.
  • It does not mean you have become or will become a victim of identity theft.

Actions to take when your new card arrives:

  • Please call the (866) number included with your new card and follow the recorded prompts to activate it and select your PIN. You can use your same PIN or select a new one.
  • Contact any Central Bank office to let us know your new card has arrived.
  • Destroy your old card.
  • Update your card information associated with any recurring payments, stores or services and in your digital wallet.

Protect Yourself

  • Utilize Central Bank’s Online and Mobile Banking to review activity frequently. Call us immediately if you notice any fraudulent charges.
  • Download SHAZAM® BOLT$, a fraud-fighting service to help you monitor debit card activity using your smartphone. The free mobile app gives you access to receive fraud alerts, view your account balance and set transaction alerts and blocks.
  • Use Apple Pay®, Google PayTM, Samsung PayTM or MasterPassTM. All of these mobile wallet services use temporary numbers (tokens) to process transactions and your card number is not shared with merchants. If merchants systems do not have your card number available, your card cannot be compromised.
